iHockeyTrainer Blog - News & Notes Around the World of Hockey

  • WJHC Hockey Canada - This years WJHC in Edmonto & Calgary was a great event.  Sweden brought home the Gold in OT and out skated the Russians throughout the final.  Swedes have been developing quite a skill pipeline & lead all European countries (See Dixon article)combined in total draft picks to the NHL of late.  Always skilled but have definitely amped up the grit level of late.  The path was carved by Forsberg & Lidstrom, now the youngsters are following.

  • Poll Results from iHockeyTrainer homepage

Poll 1)

Who will be the most improved team this NHL season???

Leafs = 45%  ... Doing a good job staying in the playoff hunt

Sabres = 17% ...More $$$ doesn't always equal better

Kings = 11% ... Now showing signs of life

Poll 2)

            Who will win this years World Junior Hockey Tourny???

Canada = 56%

USA = 11%

Sweden = 6%

...Maybe now they will get noticed with their hard play to go along with their skills

  • Books

NHL GMs tell-all book by Jason Farris giving insight to the Cup winners.  What it takes to be in business management, lessons learned & tales from behind the scenes.  Sounds Great, but a little pricey at $100 and you can only buy it online at http://www.nhlgms.com/

  • NHL News

- Hard to beleive that only a couple of years ago we hung to the edge of our seats in anticipation of Sydney Crosby going head to head with Alexandre Ovechkin.  Due to injuries to Sid, and Ovy's inconsistent play, has left the NHL looking for new angles and superstars to market the game.  Hopefully Stamkos, Hall, Toews, will start to get more of a push.

- Allstar Game - Ottawa played host to a great event.  They kept it fun and tried their best to be fan friendly.  Who knows, maybe in a few years it will become part of the Winter Classic and hold it out doors...which the players really enjoy.

- Zdeno Chara breaks his own record shooting a blast clocked at 108.8 mph!!!

Youngsters !!! Take note to the position of his front leg on follow through...it is beant allowing him to leverage his size & transfer his weight properly

- Outdoor Classic - Philly Vs. on News Years day drew the biggest crowd yet.  It's amazing, how much fun the players have once they get envolved in the game.  Must tae 'em back to beiing kids on the open pond.

- Leafs - All the hype of Reimer has come back down to earth.  Nice to see Gustavsson finally healthy and have a capable Leafs team in front of them.  They are in the mix but have a handful of difficult road games down the stretch.  Need the Grobovski-Kulemin line to add more scoring.

- Detroit Red Wings - Reel off an impressive 17 Home wins in a row at the Joe.  It's not that they win...but they do it playing the game the right way.  Skilled, skating, disciplined & hard on the puck.

  • Junior News

- Congrats goes out to iHockeyTrainer Friend - Michael St.Croix of the Edmonton Oil Kings WHL for becoming the latest Player of the Week & Player of the Month....with 10 points in 3 games.  Look out the kid now sits 3rd in the WHL scoring race.

- Trade Deadline in Junior London Knights, Sarnia Sting, Niagara Ice Dogs, & Oshawa generals were the biggest shakers, adding some veteran depth in hopes of Memorial Cup-like runs.  Only 1 can win.

- Will Connor McDavid of the Toronto Marlies M.Midget follow in the footsteps of Tavares & Ekblad to become exempt for the OHL draft on April 7??? Erie Otters will have the first pick.

  • Minor hockey - It's the end of the season with playoffs & pending tryouts ahead.  Be prepared.

Work on your skills constantly.

Get Better Every Day
