News & Notes from the World of Hockey For the Week of Jan 24 2011 - Tips, Advice, Canada, USA, Online, School, Pros

News & Notes From the World Of Hockey - January 24, 2010

  • NHL All-Star Game- Not great for the game of hockey when it's best player, Sydney Crosby, will not be there.  We love the idea of 2 captains picking their respective teams.  However, we would love to see them abolish the mandatory minimum representation of 1 player per team.
  • The Ron Wilson Saga - Toronto coach was fined by the league for violating the so called salary cap & fair play regulations.  This is pretty funny as it is pretty normal for players (and coaches on rare occasions) to place a little money incentive for a game that has some extra personal meaning to them.  For example, Dion Phaneuf is likely to put up a bit of money when he plays against the Calgary Flames.  The money that is put up for reward for the win is usually combined with the fine money & goes towards team building functions, such as a team dinner.

  • iHockeyTrainer - Has added a series of Leg Strength exercises, that can be done from home, to the daily program that are great for the development for a skating stride & dynamic power.
  • Injuries to Top Prospects - Highly touted Swedish Prospects for this years NHL draft have yet to play since the World Junior Hockey Championships.  Landeskrog & Larssen both should be in the top 3, and the minor injuries should not hurt their ranking status.
  • Evgeny Nabokov - Detroit tries to sign the goaltender only to have the New York Islanders clain the russian netminder off of re-entry waivers.  To make matters more complicated, he will not report the the Island.  Will make for interesting news to see exactly how the Wings get around the 'red-Tape' to acquire the veteran backstop

  • Atlanta Thrashers - Byfuglien & Co. have come back down to earth and will now be fighting tooth & nail for a playoff spot
  • New Jersey Devils - Have showed some signs of life of late
  • Vancouver Canucks - Most balanced team in the league has found that it can win in more ways than one
  • San Jose Sharks - On the outside looking in right now.  Need consistent goaltending & top players, Marleau/Thornton/Boyle to dominate down the stretch.
  • Ottawa Senators - Tough times in the nations capital.  Looks like they are ready for a regime change towards youth.  Desperately need a goaltender to step up & give them a chance to win
